Etc. stands for et cetera, which means "and so forth". It means that the things that came before it were examples from a larger category. An example of this would be, "John is very athletic and spends his weekends engaged in outdoor activities; hiking, rock climbing, skiing, etc." This would mean that John does these things and others, such as sky-diving, camping, or hunting.

It stands for "et cetera" which is a Latin phrasing meaning "and more". People use it when listing things if they don't want to write a million things down. Like "I enjoy cheese, milk, yogurt, etc."

To quote someone who already answered this question...

etc is short for the Latin "et cetera"

et = and
cetera = the rest

We use it to mean "and so on" in sentences, often when listing things, but they are too many and you don't want to say them all.

Sometimes "etc." really means "Ick!"

The term et cetera is Egyptian/Latin. It is usually abbreviated, i.e., "etc."

During the time of its last Pharaohs, the Egyptians worshiped cats. Many of the cats were named after the goddess of something-or-other, Cetera.

One night Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of Egypt, came home late and Mark Anthony, her husband, was sitting on the floor with a glass of vodka and a hamburger.

"Where' my cat?" Cleo demanded.

"Oh," Mark Anthony replied, I was hungry, famished, and I...et cetera."

"You ate my damn cat?" Cleo screamed.

Yeah, I sure did, Mark Anthony replied. "I et cetera."

BTW, "e.g." means "and others."

etcetera. means 'and so forth'
e.g. instead of 'We must emphasize values like honesty, courage, courtesy and so on.' just use ect. in place of 'and so on'
