As you've rightly pointed out, they were one of the best opening pairs in ODI and they have put on all those runs while opening together and they were also much feared by bowlers of the opposing teams. But as time passed on, egoism got the better of both and both started feeling that one is better than the other and here started the trouble. Again, with passing time, they started becoming less sharper and lost much of their sheen.As of now both, in my opinion are blocking the chances of promising youngsters in ODI, though they continue to be useful in ODI.

Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly were the best and most successful opening pair in the history of One Day International cricket. They were the deadliest pair in their prime. Ganguly holds the record for most sixes in ODI by and Indian. Most of them have scored more than 1000 runs in a calender year on couple of occasions during their prime time.

However, of late they are not even 50 percent form of their prime time. After he was dropped from Indian Team, Ganguly had made sincere efforts to regain his form and stake claim in the Indian Team, which he has succeeded to some extent.
