20000 a year is near poverty level here in the US for a family to try and live on. Now days you probably need to make at least 50 - 80 thousand to live a comfortable lifestyle. That is why there are so many dual income households. not every one makes 50 - 80 grand a year.

I just read an article yesterday that described a family of 3 living in poverty here in the US with an income of $17,000.

£20k is below average, but not poverty level.
Middle class is more a state of mind than an income level. However, £40 - 70k would be middle class.

in the US, yeah, 24,000 is just about poverty, depending on how many dependants you have.
lower middle class is around 30-50 K a year, with rugualr middle class just above.

It would depend on where you live, but in most of the Western world, $20,000 is a very basic wage for juniors
