I did a research project a few weeks ago and I went to a Mercedes dealer. I asked how a Mercedes would compare with a Lexus. The saleslady told me that Mercedes is more prestigious and that it is the safest car in the world. She says a Lexus is just a Toyota. I knew she was telling me all kinds of lies. I said that even a Toyota Camry has a five star crash safety rating and that the E and C-Class only recieved a four star crash safety rating (according to National Highway Traffic Safety Admin). She says that you couldn't compare a Camry with a Mercedes. Then I asked, "Well, wouldn't you expect a Mercedes that costs 3 times as much to be safer than a Toyota?" She then went on about how hardly anyone has died in a Mercedes before, except for Princess Diana. I know Japanese cars have a stereotype of being light and unsafe, but facts today don't seem to support that claim. Any impressions or comments? Go to the Mercedes category and view this question and see how I replied to their answers

The only European brand I would consider buying is BMW, those new 335i cars are awesome and reasonably priced. However, in a crash I feel quite safe in my 2006 Hyundai Azera. If you want to talk about a company that has improved leaps and bounds it is Hyundai. I'm sure the lady at the Mercedes dealer would laugh in your face if you told her you were also looking at Hyundai. However, I think the Azera is superior to any C-class car that's not a V-8 (even then its roomier) and cost $8-20K less then a Benz. Just wait for next years Hyundai Genesis, even fully loaded V-8 will only be about $41K and blow away the E-class and entry level S-class cars too.
Mercedes are simply a rip-off, my neighbor bought a ML500 and had to get new shocks/entertainment system after less then a year.

Sales people will tell you anything to get your money. Everyone knows that Mercedes are over priced, even BMW/Lexus are better values. Its untrue that most Lexus are just a Toyota, about the only thing that is the same is the undercarriage and like you said it was a safe part to start out.

As for the 1st poster, Toyota is not even close to Chevy or Ford in pickup truck sales, they still have a ways to go before they can catch Dodge even. Based on this years numbers at the mid-point Toyota is selling less then 1/2 the volume of trucks as Ford/GM which are still the #1 & #2 overall sellers.

Japanese cars and trucks are way better today than they were a few decades ago. Toyota pickups now outsell Chevy pickups, which were number 1.
