Oi, it does not mean that Transformers would only interest geeks or nerds. I'm not a nerd!

You have to admit, the others did not do so well. It is already a booster for Transformers to outperform them.

Transformers suffers from two things. The kids are unfamiliar with the cartoons (which only hurts in getting the kids into the theaters) and it is not a sequel. With a sequel you have a benchmark to compare to and you can expect how well the film will do.

Conceptually, it will be good-the CGI will allow for great special effects and it will wow the grown-ups familiar with the old cartoons.

Unfortunately, Shrek, Spiderman, and especially Pirates will still out perform Transformers. However, it will beat out Ratatooee, and The Simpsons. Expect a tie with Harry Potter (or close enough to call it even).

Probably, because if they make a sequel, it will be just as popular as the original.
The series you listed are popular because there is more than 1 movie.
Transformers will most likely end with all of the transformers leaving earth and continuing thier epic right-and-wrong, good-and-bad struggle for galactic supremecy elsewhere.

Also, Transformers, in the event it does have a sequel, will be like Men in Black. It will be the same, shoot-em-up style of movie in which the first one's story does not necessarily coincide with that of the second. That's why Transformers has lasted so long.

Harry potter, pirates and others, on the other hand, have a storyline where you have to watch them all in order to get the ending.

If you want to compare a TV series, think of Law and Order compared to Lost. You can watch any given L+O at any given time and get it. You need no knowledge of previous episodes in order to understand that episode.

Lost, on the other hand, is a series in which you do need to see previous episodes to understand the current episode.

That's why people watch shows like The Simpsons, Law and Order, M*A*S*H, etc: they can watch at any given point, and stop watching at any given point.
And that's why Transformers will be so popular: when they make a sequel, people will see it, even if they didn't see the first one.

Personally, I'm really excited to see it.

nothing beats the original animation. When these are put into movies, they either cut the essence of the story or change some parts of it. The Lord of the Rings is so far successful into putting the story into the wide screen. WE'll wait and see once this movie is out.
