Without knowing your definition of hardi-panel(It also comes in plank form where I buy) I'd go with T-111 all the time. Here at least I know t-111 to be lamiate "WOOD" whereas Hardi is MDF. Hardi certainly can be manufactured to give some appearance of rough cut lumber, and painted well, might last as long as you care, while T-111 is usually installed with the grooves verticle, and may not be as attractive to you.
It does depend though, on your desire regarding the aesthetics, budget, and your being able to maintain either siding. With no offense meant T-111 hasn't got as much "Curb Appeal" unless you embellish it with molding, etc.
In the end, if I was considering re-siding any house I owned; I wouldn't choose either material.

Depends on the application. If it`s being installed in a high moisture area, I`d go with the Hardi. As stated previously, the joints will require some sealing.
The Hardi is typically cheaper to purchase than t111. It also usually requires a little care in installing. It can be cracked quite easily.
If you can hang a ledge board on the wall to set the panels on while fastening, it makes the install a lot easier.
Personally I would pick the Hardi strickly for the products life expectency!!

I agree with DIY Doc. If you're going to reside the entire house, why use T-111? Why not fiber-cement or vinyl? Either one would be more attractive, last longer and be less maintenance. Where I live, Michigan, the woodpeckers love t-111. They peck holes right through it looking for insects.

t 111 work really good ,you can stain it ,cut it ,hang it well and will last for 20 years ,
hardy back board is good also but ive found ,that it rather flat to look at , you cant stain it .harder to join, harder to keep looking good , but outlast t11 longer .
if your looking for a good looking house with a little better keb appeal ,choose t111
