I have an aquarium which I have had for about 3 years. The hood and the filter pump are both made of a heavy black plastic material. It has gotten to the point where I cannot get the white residue caused the water off certain parts of the outside of the hood and pump no matter how hard I scrub or what cleaner I use........any suggestions? I have checked around and cannot find a store which will sell me only a new hood and I have already replaced the pump once.

Is the surface of the hood and outsides of the pump a smooth surface...if so use a single edge blade ( like used in a
hand held paint scraper)...all the white crusty areas should come off easily.
We use to do this to the hoods of the tanks in my pet store.

The white is usually a buildup from hard water, meaning you have calcium and magnesium in your water.

Try soaking it with a little hot hater first, pour the water off into your sink, then adding a little vinegar or lemon juice (these are mild acids, the calcium from calcium carbonate is a base). Let that sit for a few minutes, then sprinkle salt over it and scrub. Rinse the top well before you put it mack on the tank. If that doesn't take care of it, not much else you can do.

I have the same problem too to get some of it off slowly bend the plastic cover till the build up breaks off, and like everyone said get something like C.L.R. to remove the the hard thin layer.

If you live in a really hot sunny area and are willing to wait leave the cover in the sun, and add little bit of water once in a while. It should dry off fast and breaks off easily it was able to work for me but might have to pry some off since in some areas are vary narrow and hard to reach and the really thin layers too.

use lime away and rinse heck out of it, the rinse it again when done. Or C.L.R. cleaner, but lime away is thicker and might stick in the crannies better to get it out.

check ebay for one, you never know....
