One of my favorites is "Once Upon a Time" and I absolutely love Tony Bennett's version:

Once upon a time,
A girl with moonlight in her eyes,
Put her hand in mine,
And said she loved me so . . .
But that was once upon a time,
Very long ago!

Once upon a hill,
we sat beneath the willow tree,
Counting all the stars,
And waiting for the dawn,
But that was once upon a time,
Now, the tree is gone!

How the breeze ruffled through her hair,
How we always laughed,
As though tomorrow wasn’t there . . .
We were young,
And didn’t have a care,
Where did it go?

Once upon a time,
The world was sweeter than we knew,
Everything was ours,
How happy we were then . . .
But, somehow, once upon a time,
Never comes again!

Can you share a song that you think is especially beautiful? Please include the lyrics if at all possible.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me.

There are a number of songs that go straight to my heart.
Here is one that goes to my soul....."Going Home," from Gods and Generals."
The first time I heard it was when I saw the movie. I had discussed the movie with my father. He was in the hosp at the time....told me to go see it and tell him about it. His grandfather was in the Civil War.....Among the battles he participated in....Sharpsburg (Antietam) and Gettysburg....He was in "Pickett's Charge."
I saw the movie, was mesmerized by the song and bought the cd. One day, after dad returned home to me, I started writing my own verses to the lovely melody. I knew that one day I would sing my version at my father's memorial service. To me, the phrase, "going home," meant going home to heaven. As I wrote, I could hear Daddy breathing down the hall....It was a very poignant moment. I included a sentence about my mother. She died one year prior to dad.
Well, several months later, I did sing my song at his service.
A lady who came to my father's service asked me afterwards if I would sing "Daddy's Song" at her service. I did, a year later.
(A year after dad died, my brother died. I wrote a song and sang it as his service.....Totally original, this time....so no clip of it. Semper Fi......... big brother.)
Here is the recording of "Going Home.": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSf_UBrgBAw

I love Frank Sinatra's version of "In the wee small hours of the morning"

When the sun is high in the afternoon sky
You can always find something to do
But from dusk till dawn as the clock ticks on
Something happens to you

In the wee small hours of the morning
While the whole wide world is fast asleep
You lie awake and think about the girl
And never ever think of counting sheep

When your lonely heart has learned its lesson
You'd be hers if only she would call
In the wee small hours of the morning
That's the time you miss her most of all

When your lonely heart has learned its lesson
You'd be hers if only she would call
In the wee small hours of the morning
That's the time you miss her most of all

Also
"Basin street blues" by Louis Prima
"You'll Never Walk Alone" by Gerry and the Pacemakers
and "bella notte" from Lady and the Tramp, no matter what anybody says

P.S. I also agree with "blackbird" below, but I like Sarah Mclaughlin's version.

What a Wonderful World
-Louis Armstrong

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

The colours of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shakin' hands, sayin' "How do you do?"
They're really saying "I love you"

I hear babies cryin', I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll ever know
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world

PLAIN WHITE T'S LYRICS

"Hey There Delilah"

Hey there Delilah
What's it like in New York City?
I'm a thousand miles away
But girl tonight you look so pretty
Yes you do
Times Square can't shine as bright as you
I swear it's true

Hey there Delilah
Don't you worry about the distance
I'm right there if you get lonely
Give this song another listen
Close your eyes
Listen to my voice it's my disguise
I'm by your side

Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
What you do to me

Hey there Delilah
I know times are getting hard
But just believe me girl
Someday I'll pay the bills with this guitar
We'll have it good
We'll have the life we knew we would
My word is good

Hey there Delilah
I've got so much left to say
If every simple song I wrote to you
Would take your breath away
I'd write it all
Even more in love with me you'd fall
We'd have it all

Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me

A thousand miles seems pretty far
But they've got planes and trains and cars
I'd walk to you if I had no other way
Our friends would all make fun of us
and we'll just laugh along because we know
That none of them have felt this way
Delilah I can promise you
That by the time we get through
The world will never ever be the same
And you're to blame

Hey there Delilah
You be good and don't you miss me
Two more years and you'll be done with school
And I'll be making history like I do
You know it's all because of you
We can do whatever we want to
Hey there Delilah here's to you
This ones for you

Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
Oh it's what you do to me
What you do to me.

Mine is Song for the Asking, by Paul Simon

Here is my song for the asking
Ask me and I will play
So sweetly I'll make you smile

This is my tune for the taking
Take it, don't turn away
I've been waiting all my life

Thinking it over I've been sad
Thinking it over I'd be more than glad
To change my ways, for the asking

Ask me and I will play
All the love that I
Hold inside

I copied and pasted lyrics too but if you have not heard these by chance... you have to hear the way they are sung to really feel the beauty, you know? :))

~~~~~~~~~~~~if you get there before I do - Collin Ray
"I read a note my Grandma wrote
Back in 1923
Grandpa kept it in his coat
And he showed it once to me
He said
Boy you might not understand, but a long long time ago
Grandma's daddy didn't like me none
But I loved your Grandma so
We had this crazy plan to meet
And run away together
Get married in the first town we came to and live forever
But nailed to the tree where we were supposed to meet instead
I found this letter
And this is what it said:
Chorus:
If you get there before I do
Don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I don't know how long I'll be
But i'm not gonna let you down
Darling wait and see
And between now and then
Until I see you again
I'll be loving you . . .
Love me
Verse 2:
I read those words just hours before
my Grandma passed away
In the doorway of a church
Where me and Grandpa stopped to pray
I know I've never seen him cry
In all my fifteen years
But as he said these words to her
His eyes filled up with tears
Chorus:
If you get there before I do
Don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I don't know how long I'll be
But i'm not gonna let you down
Darling wait and see
And between now and then
Until I see you again
I'll be loving you . . .
Love me
Breakdown:
And between now and then
Until I see you again
I'll be loving you . . .
Love me
~~~~~~~~~~~ come away with me - Nora Jones
Come away with me in the night
Come away with me
And I will write you a song

Come away with me on a bus
Come away where they can’t tempt us
With their lies

And I wanna walk with you
On a cloudy day
In fields where the yellow grass grows knee-high
So won’t you try to come

Come away with me and we’ll kiss
On a mountain top
Come away with me
And I’ll never stop loving you

I wanna wake up with the rain
Falling on a tin roof
While I’m safe there in your arms
So all I ask is for you
To come away with me in the night
Come away with me

Luther Vandross - Here and Now

I look in your eyes and there I see
What happiness really means
The love that we share makes life so sweet
Together we'll always be
This pledge of love feels so right
And, ooh, I need you

Here and now
I promise to love faithfully [Faithfully]
You're all I need
Here and now
I vow to be one with thee [You and me], hey
Your love is all [I need] I need

Luther Vandross - Don't You Remember

Loneliness
Is such a sad affair
A sad affair
And I can hardly wait
To be with you again

And what to say, to say
To make you come again
Oh, honey
Come on back to me again, yeah, hey
I wanna be, I wanna be anywhere you are

Don't you remember you told me you loved me, baby
You said you'd be comin' back this way again, baby
Baby, baby, baby, woo, baby, oh, baby
Yes, I love you
I really do

Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing
Luther Vandross - If Only for One Night
Luther Vandross - I'd Rather

I'd rather have bad times with (please be mine) you,
than good times with someone else (I know)
I'd rather be beside you in a storm (anytime),
than safe and warm by myself (so sure baby)
I'd rather have hard times to gether,
than to have it easy apart
I'd rather have the one who holds my heart (my heart)
