I want to try my onboard video card but when I plug it to my onboard vid slot it just shows a black screen.

Well it's enabled/disabled in the BIOS setup.

You might also have to remove your existing add-in videocard first. Many onboard video adapters automatically disable themselves if there's any video card detected in the PCI/AGP slots.

use the bios to enable it if it is disabled : leave the video cable wit the onboard graphics and insert the new graphic card. You will have image (if the onboard didn't disable itself) and you will go to the bios and disable onboard. Then change the video cable to the graphic card and everything should work fine.
