There hundreds and i can keep up with all of them. Do they really nead so many?

It's just to keep the plot supported. If you think about it, with too few characters, the show would be pretty boring! It helps if you only concentrate on the characters that are currently "working" (couldn't think of a better word), it makes the whole thing a lot less confusing. The same thing happens with the show Naruto!

I like the story line so far...they can have as many characters as they want.
