So I am 41 weeks pregnant and my doctor told me that he is going to induce me with this pill (Cytotec). I just wanted to know how safe it is and if anybody else was induced using this and would Pitocin be safer and better? I need some help.

This drug was initially developed to prevent ulcers. It was never meant to be used to induce labor.

Cytotec has caused tears of the uterus in some cases (this can lead to death). This most often happened to women when they had had a previous uterine surgery (like a ceasarian section). The manufacturer has gone so far as to note on the label that it should not be used on pregnant women after 8 weeks of pregnancy because of this risk. Before 8 weeks it can be used to abort a pregnancy.

Another problem is contractions that are too frequent and too long in duration for the baby to tolerate sometimes occur. Other induction drugs like Pitocin and Cervadil can be stopped if this happens. Cytotec cannot be taken back. In labors that are too strong, the baby cannot get enough oxygen leading to brain damage or death.

So why do they use it? It's dirt cheap.

My doctor used a low dose cytotec on me with my second (it was a vbac and he wanted the cervix soft before starting the pitocin...oddly enough that was fine ten years ago, but now insurance companies are saying it's not)

It really depends on your overall health, the health of the baby, and oddly enough, your age. Be aware than any induction increases your risk for uterine rupture, and that you'll be attached to a fetal monitor and they will want an IV in your arm for emergency reasons.

It's also been shown in many studies that induction at 42 weeks is safer, and is less likely to require additional medical interventions (forceps, csection, painkillers, etc) than at 41 weeks. So it is worth it to wait a week later and be more likely to either go into labor naturally or be more likely to need less drugs to start labor. GOODLUCK!

i didnt do the pill but when i was induced for my 2 year old they used something that was inserted in the vagina and they did 2 doses of it back to back to soften the cervix and then put me on pitocin after that, the only thing i can say about pitocin is make sure there using the right amounts, they had givin me so much pitocin that my uterus was in a constant contraction and by time they figured that out it was too late it had caused so much stress to the baby that they had to do a emergency c section. So just ask if ur worried its YOUR body and your baby

I was induced with my second child with a drug (I don't recall the name) to thin my cervix then with pitocin. We were both fine and had no major complications. However, the labor was a quite a bit more painful than my labor with my first child who was not induced. Be sure you know your options and remember that you are the one who will ultimately choose what is best for the both of you. Good luck.

Please don't let them use Cytotec!!! Remember it is your body and they can't do anything you don't allow them to do!!!

I would try using some more homeopathic forms of induction before I used the drugs. Take a look at this website: http://www.gentlebirth.org/archives/natinduc.html

Good Luck!

i does no longer. needless to say the baby continues to be in there for a reason. that's distinctive whilst you're late. yet to do it a week forward for no reason is kinda pointless. i will basically permit you already know the way magical and specific that's to bypass into hard artwork on you very own. i did no longer get the prospect with my first 2. my daughter develop into 10 days previous due and my son had a heart arrhythmia. So i develop into led to with the two. yet my third hard artwork all started on that is very own with my water breaking. IT develop into an exceedingly exciting adventure that i does no longer commerce for something. so as somebody who has achieved it the two techniques, i might recommend you basically permit nature take that is course and permit your physique artwork as that is meant to. it's going to be something you will under no circumstances overlook. i'm no longer talking related to the discomfort. :)

I would be leary of this drug. You have every right to refuse the use of this drug if you so choose to. Request that only drugs that are labeled for induction of labor.
