I dont see why people get upset when their favorite band is put on the radio. Thats how they get noticed and draw crowds to their shows. "The underground" scene is so silly! I listen to alot of radio, so if I dont hear you then your not good and you really have to impress me straight up! Thats the way its been since the music industry started!

yea it is true that the radio does play the same song over and over again and that does sometimes kill the songs for you but it is also about the intimacy that you and your favorite band sort of can't have after they get really big. but honestly, bands want to get big so that they can do something that they love for the rest of their lives. it's like as a fan you love your favorite band so much and you tell everyone because you yourself want to get the word out about your favorite band and they want to widen their fan base. when bands get big, you can't get close to them anymore as well. there is a total difference from seeing your favorite band in a small club and then having to go see themm in an arena. before you could actually talk to them face to face and have an actualy conversation. once they get big poeple feel like their face is just another in the crowd because if you even got the chance to talk to them, how would they remember you? i wish a lot more bands would play secret shows and go on those small club tours. the feeling is totally different seeing your favorite band upclose and in such a small intimate venue. i meanif you didn't want them to get big then you wouldn't have gone t all the shows and spread the word. being on mainstream radio does mean that you have to be someehat good and i think people just need to calm down about their favorite band being on mtv and how that makes them sellouts. i think it's rediculous. if the music is good then its good and so you might as well keep on listening.

You need to do some history research...
It's not so much that people get mad with their band being put on the radio it's that when a band signs and is pushed to the multimedia monster, they are also pushed (most, if not all of the time) to change their image, sound, lyrics, etc. to be more amiable to the masses...less true to their sound...
We've seen this with many groups from Metallica to Shania Twain and unfortunately many of the groups disband before regaining the power to reclaim their own sound.

As for radio play...KDKA my home town radio station started broadcasting as the first commercial radio station in the US back in 1920's and to be general...for many, many years radio stations had only limited range and weren't corporate owned so...one station might have a hit while another towns away never even hearing the so called hit....Band's sold and retained fans by touring and doing minitours as much as possible.

I think people get mad because if the radio played all the underground rock and metal bands (including sub genres) then so many people will hear it would kill a song because the radio plays every song over and over again. Plus if underground bands were to be played on the radio you would be hearing so many bad new variations of rock and metal bands from alot of talentless people. Hence look at what happened to rap when they first decided to go mainstream and alot of rock bands on the radio aren't good to be honest compared to the underground ones.

That's the problem; music became an *industry* & stopped being art. a long time ago.

*Generally* there's nothing wrong w/ getting heard on radio, the problem arises when your fave band gets caught up in the hype, polishes/waters down their sound to suit a wider audience & the original fans usually get left behind.

*THat's* part of why it sucks & that's why the indie/underground scene is Not silly. Bands from that ilk are fed up w/ that hype thing & are making music for themselves & whoever wants to hear them. The ones who stick to their guns avoid major labels & stay independent.

I think it has something to do with "if it goes mainstream then it's ... like ... they sold out". There are elitists in every sector of the arts and society in general. There's a lot more money to made in the mainstream. There are musicians who don't care about how popular they are with the general public, they just get off on that their peers in the industry appreciate what they're doing. If they make it to the top 20 on the radio, that's great, just so long as their music has made a difference to just one listener. Some people do it for the fame and $$. Some people do it because it's in them.

If you like a band or a song, it doesn't matter what anyone else says about it. It's the connection it has with you, as the listener, that's important.

If so many people feel the same way, then obviously it's going to get picked up on the radio. Good for them, I say!

I think some people get so worked up over it because radios tend to over play every song. When I hear a certain song 5 times in 1 hour it gets old. People just don't want their favorite bands to get played out.

well, i'm all for the underground scene...because when a band gets played on the radio...it becomes a trend to listen to that band...i don't think they take the lyrics seriously...it's cool to listen to them...they make the band seem like sell outs...that's my opinion...if the bands want to get well known...don't be played on pop stations...how about alternative rock stations...and, play shows! true fans will see the band.

I never have fully understood why people make music then disdain crowds. It killed Kurt Cobain, broke up Supertramp, has Metallica and Green Day fans in an uproar, and I'm sure has put thousands of singers in rehab.

I dislike American Idol as much as I do the underground scene. Make good music, regardless of what you look like, and take the good with the bad. I and countless others are waiting.
