The short answer: Independent Films are films that are not financed by the major Hollywood studios such as Universal, Fox, Sony Pictures, or Warner Brothers.

The films generally are released at film festivals or are direct to DVD. Studios have the option to purchase the distribution rights to the films shown at many film festivals. Nowadays, most of the major studios if not all have a division dedicated to the distribution of independent films. In addition, there are many smaller theaters in the US that show independent films (or art house films as some call them).

Some popular and well known independent films that have been distributed nationally:

"Little Miss Sunshine"
"Blair Witch Project"
"Hustle and Flow"
"The Queen"
"The English Patient" (Miramax pretty much was an independent film distributor originally. They still are noted for their assisting of independent filmmakers. Kevin Smith is noted on that list.)
Anything made by Tarrentino, Robert Rodriquez, and Kevin Smith is pretty much independent.

However, many films that are shown at film festivals do not get the national distribution deal. Films like "Green Street Hooligans", "Murder Party" and "Park" are all good films but will not be seen on a national level. "Green Street Hooligans" did get a limited release in NY and LA. It is also a foreign film.

Furthermore, some independent films are self-funded and they get no monetary returns save for festival money.
