I have a dell 1000 that runs slow only at times?

it has about 38 processes giong on when I start up and I dont know what ones to end. If I try to end something is says system failure could result

Prevent them from starting up in the first place...go here:

Start => run => type msconfig => select start up tab

Uncheck items that you don't want to start up when you start your computer. Leave items like AV and video but pretty much everything else can be unchecked. I bet you have a ton of stuff checked. Restart and when the message box appears check don not show me theis message again and OK...You now have more available system resources.
