It could be the air/ fuel mixture causing the emissions to be out of whack. In which case it would not be feasible to fix. But have it scanned just to be sure.

Since the car is older than a 96 you can't send it to Autozone to get it scanned, I know I work at one. Only 96 or newer cars which are OBDII (on board diagnostics) can be scanned by us. Yours is an OBDI. What engine you have, the 3.1 V6 or the 4 cyl? I used to have a 95 Chevy Corsica with the 3.1 V6 which had a similar problem which turned out to be the EGR valve. We sell a tool for GM cars that you can scan it pretty easily yourself for cheap to find out.

given the fact that the computer is only an obd1 system, it can only check for opens or shorts in electrical circuits. this may minimize your options for repair, or enlarge the possibility of frustration, but the systems were far less complex at that point.
scan it and go from there. that will at least give you the opportunity to find the nature of the problem.

Have the computer scanned, or drive slower.
