DID WE REALLY WENT OLD SCHOOL?
Do you think school's are going to easy, and we should throw out the calculators, because we rely on them too much, for us to even calculate like we did in the old ways? (WHich is more effective?)

When I was really little (I mean kindergarten and 1st grade), we counted on an abacus.

Today's math is much different than it was back in the day. I have trouble with my kids' homework and I had honor roll when I was in school! I think calculators are ok as long as children are taught basic math by hand to begin with.

Yes, calculators has hurt the school's education!!!

I really get aggravated when ya go into a "fast food"
restaurant & the teller does not know how to make change!!!

I grad from High School 20 years ago; and all thru my schooling years we could not use a calculator until AFTER,
we learned how to do & use our math skills without calculators; Good ole days, math classes, you had to work math problems out the "long way" and 1/2 your credit for a math problem was, showing your work.

Short answer: YES! schools are getting way too easy!
state tests like S.A.T. test, etc shows that our schools are not as good as they used to be!!!!

The problem with calculators is that children don't actually learn to add and subtract, and are unaware of the numbers they're using. What's 1,000 - 100. You know right off the top of your head. However, if you miss one digit, you get 990 or 0. If you've only used calculators, you'll miss this.

I think calculators should not be allowed until 5th grade. The process of problem solving and learning to get from start to finish is being abandoned in favor of the quicker, easier way.

It is true that many people do not know how to do the simple things like count money back if their register goes down, yet they know the complicated math that was not taught 35 years ago...

I say teach both methods...

I think they should only be used on complex math (calculus) when thinking initially is required to put anything else in the calculator.

I think calculators should not be use until college--i think children should do math on paper and in their heads until then--just too learn.
