Most likely your Motorola DVR's USB ports are not active. If by chance you have a Motorola DVR from comcast that has FireWire ports then check out this article of how to connect your Motorola to a PC. http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/

If this does not work in your case then as the other post said you need a PCMCIA TV Tuner Card for your Laptop or a PCI TV Tuner Card for a Desktop. Since you listed a Laptop I suggest you look on ebay for a TV Tuner Capture Card. I am posting a ENDED auction listing from ebay just to show you what it is and about how much to expect to pay. http://cgi.ebay.com/TV-Tuner-Cardbus-PCMCIA-Video-Capture-Card-FOR-Laptop_W0QQitemZ300123307611QQihZ020QQcategoryZ3710QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

After you have a TV Tuner Capture card you just connect a Coaxial Cable, or a RCA Audio and Video cable, or a S-Video and RCA Audio Cable from the OUTPUT of your DVR to the INPUT on the Capture Card. Then you press play on the DVR and Record on the PC's Capture Card software. Once it is finished recording the movies/shows you can edit and burn them to DVD.

If you can get the first method to work you can transfer teh shows/movies very quickly, a 2 hour movie in about 15-20 minutes, if you use the second method then a 2 hour movie will take 2 hours to transfer.

I hope this helps, please feel free to send me an email if you have any further questions...

In most cases you can't do it directly. Your computer needs to have a TV capture card, then you simply play back the shows on the DVR.

It's not situation where your laptop can read the DVR's recorded files directly, or anything like that.
