Without knowing what is important to you, your Q is impossible to answer. Price? Schools? Shopping? Night life? Singles bars? Gyms? Open space?

Linden is nice if you want a (relatively) cheap ranchette, but if you are single and like to dance, you'll be driving 30 miles to find a night club.

The Lakewood District in Modesto has a great school and nice parks. It is 45 minutes from Stockton if there isn't any traffic and homes start in at $400,000 and go up quickly.

In general, the further east you go, the cheaper and less developed the towns are. Beyond that, we would need LOTS more details.

I don't think either location is great. Stockton's crime rate is pretty high. My brother works for the railroad in Stockton and gangs are a huge problem up there; they've been known to shoot at passing trains. Really try to consider some other city possibilites if possible. Both are in primarily argricultural areas; I guess if that is what you are looking for it's ok but having spent a little time in both places I would never want to live there.
