Think of the metaphor of the callous. You have a sensitive or tender place, but it gets used and used again, and each time it does, it grows a coarse shell over its former tenderness. It isn't even that the tenderness is completely gone--it is just hidden under a layer of armor.

So when a heart is calloused, it means the same--that the natural tenderness is hidden behind a protective shell; and that protective shell is one that the individual acquired from painful experience.

A simple way to think about it is like the callouses on your hand. When you work a lot with your hands you get the hard spots or protective layering on your hands. So after treating so many women like queens and all they want is your money you could say your heart becomes calloused or hardened to all the BS and you finally won't put up with it anymore.

It means that you have become insensitive to other's pain and sorrow, through having experienced it often yourself. It relates to, say, a carpenter, whose hands have become calloused and experience less pain when he is working with wood etc, because the skin on his hands has become harder through years of work.
