Has Bush done anything right in his white house?

I find this whole conversation facinating because people (mostly liberals) forget or exclude one good thing thats comming out of this. Because stem cell reseach in its current condition of using embriotic stem cells is not getting funding, scientists are working to work around the problem by extending the science into using adult stem cells. cells from the skin or cells from the embellical cord which doesnt involve the destruction of a human fetus, to get the job done in a different way. Many believe that this other cells hold more promise for the medical field because in fixing diseases using the patients own cells would provide a genetic match which is preferable then using a stem cell from a fetus that would not be a genetic match. this is where the president wants the funds spent on and i do not think that we would be at the point we are now without the president vetoing using funds on embriotic stem cells

Besides we'll eventually have a bill that funds stem cell research, thats a given, but now thanks to Bush theyll figure out how to use ones own cells to regrow organs

A blow to science in a way, and in some people's opinion a victory for humanity. It raelly comes down to your opinion on when life begins. The embryonic stem cells are taken during or before the eight cell stage of an embryo. This is a microscopic grouping of cells, is it really an individual? Everyone feels differently.

eelfins....there is NO evidence that stem cells cure anything? Are you blind, there is more than enough evidence, just because you choose not to believe it doesn't make it untrue.

I think the science, if it is valid, will be funded as most research is funded: through private funding.
The only thing he vetoed was TAX dollars to pay for it.

No one is owed tax money to pay for their pet projects, no matter how important they think it is.

If it is that lucrative, that important, if that many people want it, they'll fund it. It will be worth it.

If it's supporters have been lying and the research isn't that valuable or important, it will die, stillborn, at this veto.

That's what they fear. They've built it up, but the only workable results they've gotten are from adult stem cell research. That has NOT been vetoed and is funded. It's only the research using embryo stem cells that is not funded by tax dollars, and that also has no workable results yet, despite the same period of time to develop results as adult stem cell research.

Helps not to distort the facts in your question.

Bush's veto is absolutely foolish.....it's a blow to science AND humanity. The benefits that we have reaped from stem cell research are absolutely astonishing. Did you know, for example, that doctors have been able to implant stem cells into people with spinal cord injuries and they have regained partial movement of their limbs? All these uneducated, ignorant fundamentalist Christians (those are the people who pressured him into vetoing it) have no idea what kinds of potential stem cell research has for the benefit of humanity. Bush vetoed this only to please the fundamentalist Christians in an effort to help the Republicans keep the White House next year in the presidential election. Blocking federal funding of embryonic stem cell research has and will continue to inhibit scientists from realizing the full potential from this medical marvel.

He has taken a stand for the moral side of the issue.

He has not banned anything, he has refused to fund the research. This forces science to seek/find other avenues that will provide the desired results without the undesired.

We must not do something just because we can, we must always ask ourselves if we should.

If we open this door, I fear a new and greater wave of abortions. Consider how many would consider this a fine way to make an extra dollar or two.

Its like the Dark Ages...the battle between what the Church says versus what the Science Guy says. I'm for making things better by solving problems with cures...not treating symptoms so people can live with a problem. I see Stem Cell research leading to cures of diseases. What I don't get is that the Religious right are so eager to protect the fetus but when that fetus matures and later commits a capital crime than they are so eager to execute them. Is that Pro Life?

If vetoing the research would actually save the lives of the unborn embryos it would be a victory for humanity. Hopefully the lives will be saved, but with a lack of a right to life law I am not confident many will be saved. I hope I'm wrong.

Stem cell research is already legal, Bush just vetoed taxes for stem cell research. Embryonic stem cell research is just another liberal crusade to legitimize abortion. It has nothing to do with science, since there NO evidence that embryonic stem cells can cure anything.

Emryonic stem cells have yet to produce anything that you'd call a medical benefit. However, using stem cells from the umbilical cord blood and amneotic fluid have produced actual results. No need to use embryo's, unless you want to snuff out a life.
