Just today I was in the shower and a loud noise (like a long rattling) occured followed by the shower pressure dropping. I turned off the water and started it up again and it went away. However, it happened again when my wife went in this evening. What is going on?

You have an air bubble in the hot water line. Go to the top floor and open up a hot water tap and bleed it out.

If this is a two or three handle shower, probably an older style (10+ years) one of the washers has come loose off of the stem. Ive seen this problem before on a variety of fixtures. The rubber washer is at the end of the stem and the screw will back off or the washer just gets too worn and comes off the screw causing an odd humming or vibrating sound and you cant hold the right temperature. If your' handy you can take the faucet apart (turn off the water first!!) and put on new washers. If not handy just call a plumber.

It sounds like bad washers. You probably need to replace them. You can get a rebuild kit at most home centers. They are not very hard to replace.

The first guy had it right on. You need to let some air out of your line.
