my mechanic claims I need new ball joints. It sounds fishy to me. Don't they last longer than that? 65000 mi. I have no unusual wear on the tires, there's no shimmy or unusual handling.

i would agree with you ,that's not a lot of miles for it to need new ball joints in it,the un-even wear could just be a front end out of alignment, but its possible they can go bad,i have seen newer cars or trucks with bad joints in them, but its not that common to see one that new that needs them,if i was you id try another shop ,and have the check all of this, and if the say the same thing, then you might need them ,but don't tell them what the other shop said about it,let them find them if they are bad, they will see them and tell you, good luck hope this helps.

You don't wait for unusual tire wear or shimmy, or you are paying for new tires at the same time. The idea is to catch the wear before other damage occurs. The problem with sealed ball joints is when they start to go, they start to go, and it can be at 50,000 miles, or 100,000 miles. When they all had grease fittings, anybody who greased more often than the manual ended up with anywhere from 125,000 to 200,000 miles before they wore.

Mechanical parts will not last forever!I have seen newer with less miles with more problems than just ball joints.Do you even realize how much abuse front ends take.65000 miles and seven years youve hit alot of bumps and potholes somethings bound to wear out.

If they were never greased with each oil change then they might have excess wear and tear.

The "spec's" will dictate whether they are too worn. It's measured in millimeters. They all move but if they move more than "X" millimeters side to side then they are out of spec's.

There's a book on every car ever made and your shop should have one and it tells all of the spec's and service intervals.

Good Luck!

Is it achievable? confident. would i propose it? No. don't be a miles less costly bastard, only have the ball joint replaced. it rather is basically $2 hundred or so at maximum shops, or if it rather is only pressed in, do it your self for $50.

I own a shop but I dunno on this one, I am not saying he is lying but I would go get a second opinion, seems rather soon to me, I have seen hub-wheel bearings go bad that soon on those trucks, but ball joints, I doubt it, go take it to a shop that will inspect the front end for free and ask to have the ball joints checked, dont tell them another mechanic said they were bad, if they say yes ask them to show you the play, and then have faith in the first mechanic for not lying to you, and if he did, then never go back good luck and peace out
