Because widescreen is better.
With full screen, you can lose up to 50% of the picture, depending upon the aspect ration.
No true movie lover prefers fullscreen.

The first reason is because it is easier to make a widescreen DVD than a Pan Scan or Full Screen DVD because all you have to do is transfer it to DVD, no editing.
The second reason is the movie makers would like you to see the movie the way it was intended to be seen and not with pieces cut out.
And third, they are trying to satisfy the videophiles that want to build home entertainment theaters in their living rooms and part of that theater is a widescreen television which hopefully they have purchased with the circuitry to turn Widescreen, or letterbozed videos into full screen productions for their widescreen sets. Normally if the television is cheap it does not make the video fit the screen, so the black bars appear in the widescreen television.

because widescreen dvds out-sell full screen dvds by a 5-1 ratio.
most movie fans want to see the movie the way it was shown in the theaters. widescreen formatted dvds achieve this. to make a dvd in the full-screen format, 30% of the original frame of film is cut out because of the square nature of the tvs.

Because they have to cut part of the picture out for fullscreen. Ergo, widescreen is better (it has not been formatted to fit your screen). You don't need a widescreen TV to enjoy it either. Many people prefer it, so that's why.

Because DVDs are QUALITY, made for QUALITY people and widescreen is top QUALITY! It's the TV people who are messed up. Who sees in SQUARE vision? Life is a sweeping landscape. Get used to it.

Widescreen TV's are getting more popular. I still prefer fullscreen, though. It's a trend that I'm not too fond of but, oh well.

That's easy it's a marketing ploy to push you toward buying a wide screen TV.
