Well, I know that Clive Owen went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Perhaps you can look up a syllabus or course descriptions to see what they teach specifically.

James Gandolfini earned a degree in Communications from Rutgers and went to an acting class with a friend on a lark... no technique is mentioned in anything I've seen.

Philip Seymour Hoffman attended Tisch School of the Arts. I didn't find anything specific as to technique, but below is a transcript to his appearance on Inside the Actor's Studio and he does talk a little bit about his 'technique' near the end.

Almost no one does or teaches the "Method" anymore. It's based on a false principle. The actor tries to BECOME the character, completely, bringing nothing as actor to the role. A) this can't be done because only the playwright knows the character well enough to even attempt this. B) If every actor playing the same part BECAME the role, then all their performances would be identical and there would be no reason to perform the play more than once.

Clive Owen - good actor. sort of plays himself. so i'd say charcter actor.
