I have 2 small holes about the diameter of a golf ball and I've also got a larger one near one of the small ones. This one is about the diameter of a grapefruit and appears to have gotten bigger over the last few days. I think the smaller ones may be from moles but what would make the large hole?

I live in central NJ. I have a wooded area behind my house where I've seen many kinds of critters! (squirrels, rabbits, deer).

I have BOTH ground hogs and moles...grrrrrr. Anyhow, if the smaller holes have raised elevations (which are their tunnels) you are talking about moles...however, their openings are not usually that noticable or visible.

The larger does sound like my ground hog holes.

Live traps or kill traps work well for ground hogs, I find they like strawberries around here...as for the moles...still working on that. Good luck.

First off I think ground hog is out of the question. So is the badger they are huge. Badgers try not to invade the human space.
See photo of Puxatony Phil....
Won't fit into that size hole.

moles and gophers as well as field mice and snakes could be the culprits. they all would fit into that size hole.
Moles will make tunnels all thru your yard so if you don't have the tunnels then eliminate the mole as a culprit. The rest is left and it could be all of them since they share some of the same space.

Without knowing the region you live in, I would suspect gophers! Well actually I would suspect your smaller holes would be from gophers, your larger one possibly a rabbit or a badger?

the small ones are from a small mole and the big ones are from a big mole
