Okay, this is a cool question:

C - Johnny Bench - Along with Pudge, he's arguably the greatest defensive catcher of all-time, and he put up huge power numbers in a pitchers' era.

1B - Lou Gehrig - Nobody else at this position even comes close. A .340 career average and 493 homers? Insane.

2B - Rogers Hornsby - I like Joe Morgan, but Hornsby was a great fielder and an unbelievable hitter. Only Ty Cobb had a higher career batting average, and Hornsby quietly put 300 homers on the board.

3B - Mike Schmidt - His batting average wasn't high, but his .380 OBP is higher than Brett/Ripken/Molitor because he drew a ton of walks. He got on base, hit over 500 homers, and won 10 Gold Gloves.

SS - Honus Wagner - I think A-Rod has a chance here if he keeps up his pace, but Wagner takes it for now. Over 3,400 hits, with great patience and speed, and the best defensive shortstop of his time.

OF - Babe Ruth - I think his inclusion speaks for itself.

OF - Ted Williams - The best pure hitter to ever play, and the man who probably had the best strike zone judgement of all time. Managed 500 homers and 2,600 hits despite giving away three years to WWII. An amazing stat here - 2,021 walks in his career, with only 709 strikeouts.

OF - Ty Cobb - I so badly want to choose Musial over a jerk like Cobb, but you can't argue with the guy's numbers.

SP - Christy Mathewson - There are a number of right answers here, but I've gotta' go with Matty. Not only is he an admitted personal favorite, but he also ranks third in wins and shutouts, and 8th in ERA. He also gets points in my book for being the only one with the guts to speak out the Black Sox scandal as it was happening.

Sorry if that went on too long - that was a fun question to answer.

tough to say....I like a "balanced" offensive and defensive team....taking players in their "prime" year...I'll go with this lineup in the field...not exactly sure what batting order, though..

2b: Ryne Sandberg
SS: Ozzie Smith
3b: Mike Schmidt(just slightly over Pete Rose)
LF: Ted Williams
CF: Mickey Mantle
RF: Babe Ruth

Closer: Dennis Eckersley
