Perhaps it sounds like something a 4-year old would dream up because of the time period in which it was used. The "n" word was not common back in the old days. Of course, the "n" word was derived from the Spanish for black.
"Honky" and "Caucasian" are also offensive, as are most terms people use to describe another group. Look at "Frogs", "Spics", "Kraut", etc.
It is a sad reflection upon Humans that they "need" to use such terms.

It does sound a bit silly, but I can understand why African Americans would find it offensive, as it also sounds patronising and - as you say - childish.
I watched my much loved dvd "Showboat" just this week, and in the "Old Man River" song the word is used.
As this is in context of the time related to in the movie, I didn't find it offensive there, just a bit nostalgic, no thats not the word either, but such a beautiful song, the word was just that - a word.
Sometimes I think people go overboard about policital correctness, I have a collection of those wonderful dolls, gollywogs. They were considered a no-no for a while, because they were black and called wogs? I have so called wog (italian friends) who thought it all a bit of a joke, fortunately my dolls are back in favour, and just called gollies now. I think its a bit like some Brits getting upset at being called poms, I call my english friends poms, and its a term of great endearment.....

I remember Dave chappelle using that in a joke when mentioning how "fair" and "balanced" fox news was towards African Americans.
it was funny when he used it as a joke, but I've never heard an actual racist use that term yet.
if it's racist then it's stupid...simple math.
Racist = Stupid

that's just how the world works these days. they can say anything cause we "owe" them, but i had friends who got kicked out of school for painting their faces black on school spirit day because it was racist, dispite the fact that our school colors are black and gold (this person was a junior, and the juniors and seniors were assigned black as their color) people just need to get over it, damn it.

That's funny, I have a black friend named Darkie. I guess her parents made up the wrong name when they named her. Maybe they should have gone with Fagreesha, Shifleesha, or Froneesha or some other crap that spewed out of their mouth.

What exactly are you asking? This term is no longer considered appropriate, no matter how cute you think it sounds.
