What makes you eligible to play for a national soccer team. If my great-grandparents come from Italy, can I be eligible to play for Italy

Yes you could play for Italy because of your relatives.

First you would have to take the Italian nationality, and afterwards yes, you could be eligible, but only if you haven't played for another country. Like Deco (Brazilian) playing with Portugal

No unless you were be born in Italy... to play on a national team, you must be born in that nation ... 1 exception: if your born while your parents are on holiday

japan has a brazilian player on their national team who suddenly became a japanese citizen. So governments can become pretty imaginative when they want a player on thir national teams.

you have to have a citizenship from that country. if you have multiple citizenships then you choose. once you play for that country, then you can't change National Teams.
