"y is a function of x" means you need to solve for y

1) 8x + y = 14
y = -18x + 14

2) -9x + 3y = 18
3y = 9x + 18
y = 3x + 6

3) 4x = -2y + 26
4x - 26 = -2y
y = -2x + 13

1) 8x + y = 14
-8x -8x
y = -8x + 14

2) -9x + 3y = 18
+9x +9x
3y = 9x +18
3y/3 9x/3 18/3
y = 3x + 6

3) 4x = 2y + 26
-26 -26
4x -26 = 2y
4x/2 -26/2 2y/2
2x -13 =y

1 y = 14 - 8x

2 y = (18 + 9x)/3
y = 6 + 3x

3 (4x - 26)/-2 = y
y = 13 + 2x

That means solve each equation for y. Just pretend you have one variable and go about solving the same way

1. Get rid of the 8x. How by subtracting it from both sides.

So, y=-8x+14 or y=14-8x

The others are the samme, but you will have to divide by the number in front of x.
