Do not turn the mower over to drain the oil.

Pull the spark plug wire and position it so that it cannot touch the plug before doing any work.

There should be a drain on the underside of the motor, look for the plug.

Other things you should check are the air filter, over the carburetor intake. If it is foam type, it can be washed out with dish washing soap. If it is a rigid paper type, replace if it is dirty.

Pull the spark plug and examine for excess carbon, oil. A new plug can be found for less than $5, if it looks too dirty.

If it is a push mower. There is a plug on the bottom of the mower, It probably has a square hole in it that you can take out with a 3/8 ratchet, or an Allen wrench. If you turn the mower upside down you will run oil up into the cylinder and foul the plug.
If it a rider there will probably be a plug on the bottom or side of the engine. It may have a square head on it to take out with a crescent wrench. The more expensive mowers will have a filter to exchange too. It isn't neccasary to change the filter every time. Every other time is sufficient.

Tip the mower on its site (so that gas cap points up)
Then look at the bottom of the motor, for a square, either raised plug or recessed plug. if it's recessed, you can use a conventional socket wrench, insert it to remove. if it's raised, you can use a crescent wrench to remove.
Find a pan thin enough to rest under the mower (old cake pans work well) then set the mower over the pan, and remove the oil cap. (to air help push the oil out)

Replace the plug, and fill with SAE 30 non detergent oil.

It's a good idea to take the plug out and clean it or replace it, and also to replace the air filter.

Happy mowing!

To start with a little safety disconnect the spark plug. Ok now remove the plug and drain the oil you might have to tip the mower to do this. When drained sit the mower upright and add oil but, do not over fill it.
