or put another way, does man's intellect give him the right to treat other species of animals in ways he would certainly not wish to be treated? i'll bet anyone who has ever been a prisoner or worse could speak rather eloquently on this subject. or is it that our intellect gives us evolutionary advantage over all others and we are simply behaving according to genetic program?...

The latter. Everything we do is natural, we are a part of nature. With this intellect though, comes physical consciousness, and this will naturally even out harm that we cause to nature as a whole, or we wil be naturally selected out.
P.S.: I do not believe we are in control of global warming. I am conscious and have studied the facts.

Yes, but I cannot speak of compassion derived from intellect in other people, because I believe in free will. Compassion cannot be forced from one person by another, or from one group by another. That is a self serving action disguised as compassion by the party forcing another party against their god given will.

Intellect without compassion is meaningless. We would do ourselves a favor if we could treat all living things with respect. Its all interconnected and we are all part of the same ecosystem.
