Invention of the microchip. It lead to the computer, spread of information, changing economies of the 21st century, spread of education, and military changes. It has changed everything - news, culture, populations, disease management, food production, and the industrial economies. All the wars, famines, sicknesses, economic and political changes will be influenced by it.

The defeat of the "Gang of Four" in China in 1976, upon the death of Chairman Mao, and the rise of Deng Xiaoping over the next two years as China's next strong man, will have an enormous influence through the 21st century.

This event meant that the Cultural Revolution, and any hope of the creationof a new model of socialism in China, was at an end.

Long before the parallel developments in Russia, China headed down the road of capitalism and even (so far modest) political openness.

There have been ugly incidents along the way, such as at Tiananmen Square in 1989. But Hong Kong was peacefully re-absorbed into the sovereignty of the PRC in 1997, and has continued its own capitalistic and open ways unchallenged in the decade since.

The challenging integration of China with the western industrial world will be THE big story for decades to come, even dwarfing in importance the conflicts between the west and the Moslem world.

My statements here have been extremely simplified, and after you do your research you may even want to call me a liar. But, in that case ... I will have gotten you to do the research!

Well, at first I was going to say WWII, but awful as it was and interesting and engrossing as it is; it's over and really probably won't impact the 21st century, except maybe for starting technology that was developed during it, but technology was developed at other times, also.

So, then I thought of space flight, because if it continues to go forward it will have a definite impact during this century, but given the obstacles to overcome, I think that this century will see progress, but nothing astounding, since the last 40 years of space flight haven't really produced much; although I could be wrong.

After some thought I decided upon science, particularly DNA discoveries and gene mapping and cloning, etc. I see the greatest potential for remarkable discoveries in these fields, especially in regards to developing methods for disease treatment and preventing birth defects, etc. Of course, both of these and cloning scare me s h i t less because we already have way to many people on this planet and all of the least prepared seem to reproduce the most.

The collapse of the Soviet Empire and the breaking down of the Berlin Wall.

WW II was influential but by the end of the 20th century its effect had been subsumed into the Cold War. The end of the Cold War has underpinned political and economic activity since then and will continue to do so for many years.

The only other candidate is 9/11 because that may have been the precipitating factor in the war of ideologies that seems to be developing. However, that occurred this century. I also think that the war of ideologies would be impossible, or difficult (and certainly different) where there were two opposed and effectively equal superpowers. Modern terrorism has grown because of post Cold War international instability, not in spite of it.

I believe the internet will impact the 21st century the most. 30 years ago you had to spend all day doing things that today can be done on the internet in 5 minutes. You can shop, pay bills ,earn a degree, order pizza, etc.... The list goes on and on. You can actually live without leaving your house. As everyone can see the possiblities are becoming endless as each day goes by, and it scares me to think what people are gonna be alble to do with the internet in the next few years. So that is my best answer to that question.

I think the whole revolution thing that happened in the 1960s will continue to have the greatest impact on the future. So many things, people, morals, ideals were changed during that time that nothing has been the same since. Life has not been the same since it happened. I refer to the time prior to that whole 60s thing as, "the age of innocence." It was a time when people were still honest, still trusting, still had morals. It was a time when our children were still safe to play in their own neighborhoods, our elders were still respected. It was a lovely time, and I'm sad that it's gone forever. In it's place is an "anything goes;" an "it's all about me" attitude. The cruder the better. Ugh. So sad...

1953...
Iran had joined the Axis powers during WWII. The Allies made quick work of them and placed a new Shaw in power. A 21 year old prince who was friendly to the west. However in 1953 the people of Iran revolted against their King in favor of a democratic government.
But because the King of Iran was our ally and supplying the United States with a perfect pipeline of oil, President Eisenhower sent American troops in to Iran to quell the DEMOCRATIC insurrection in order to "maintain the economic stability of the oil industry in Iran."
Had he not it is conceivable that Iran, the strongest military power in the middle east would be a democratic state and ally of the west. as it was 25 years later the Ayatollah Khomeni led his own revolt and supplanted radical Islam in the region. Radical Islam, instead of democratic thought spread over the middle east from the end of the 70s till September 11th 2001 which set the tone for, at the very least, the first half of the new millennium.
It is the sins of our grandfathers for which we now pay.

I think the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of WW2. That officially started the nuclear arms race. Now nearly every country in the world has nuclear weapons and it is more than likely that at some point in the 21st century there is going to be an all out nuclear war.
