Personally, I would go to BestBuy or Circuit City and tell them the features and capabilities you would like your laptop to hone and posess at your fingertips. This will be answered to you in detail upon your own accord, however, I merely answer your question with direction or assistance in finding it. Ciao!

If you are totally unsure what to get then get something new and cheap. Example:

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?&ref=cj&pfp=cj&product_code=344633&cm_ven=Performics&cm_cat=DealCatcher.com&cm_pla=General&cm_ite=Primary

Even the most basic current laptop can surf the internet, IM, play music and movies, and store pictures.

As for playing games, only the fastest laptops can reliably play games.

If you get a cheap laptop (400-500) and use it for a year then you will have a really good idea what you like and don't. Probaby it will be fine, possibly a cheap memory upgrade will make you happier.

If you really hate it, then after a few months you will know exactly what you didn't like about it. You resell your laptop on Ebay, sure you lose some money, but not too much (probably get $250-$300 for the laptop) and you can use that towards the laptop you will know you really like.

The big question is : do you really need games. If you really want games pump up your price tag a bit. Also, how important is size and battery life.

Any should work. Macs are reliable. Doesn't seem if you're looking for anything specific. A price range would help. There are laptops out there that costs as low as $500. DELL right now has a great deal on a laptop for only $620.

For your intended applications, you do not need a dual core cpu. Choose one with Intel's Yonah, like the CeleronM 440 or 450 or Core Solo. Have at least 1Gb RAM and choose ATI or Nvidia graphics (Geforce Go 7xxx would be great). You will have plenty to spare from your budget but you will definitely enjoy that cost-effective set up.
