John Wilkes Booth

2007-06-21 15:16:40 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 0 2

Booth was at the head of a conspiracy that involved seven others. The plan was for them to kill Lincoln, Johnson (the VP) and Seward the Sec. of State all at the same time. Booth did his part, but one of the others got drunk and never tried to kill Johnson (who was living in a boarding house room at the time), and the third hacked Seward with a knife badly, but he lived.

The act took place in Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865 and Lincoln died on the 15th at a home across the street from the theatre. The play he went to see was "An American Cousin," a comedy. Booth, an actor, knew the theatre well and timed his shot to be covered by laughter from the audience at a particularly funny scene. Booth was not a Confederate - he did not fight for the Confederacy or even live in Virginia. He was a Southern sympathizer though, but he was mainly crazy and a drunk.

Lincoln actually had a dream that he would be killed the week of the assassination.

Booth ran south with an accomplice in to Virginia and relied upon a network of sympathizers to help him. He lived on the run for almost two weeks before being turned in by a VA family who had Booth in their barn. Booth had broken his leg in the escape from the theatre and was hampered in his escape by this. He was shot in the barn which was also burned, and he died shortly after being pulled from the barn.

John Wilks Booth

now you want to hear something funny?

i heard this story a while back (its all true)

In New York City there was a young actor, waiting for a train to philidelphia. As the train neared the station, the platform was geting over crowded.
Near the front of the platform was a young college student being very careless and standing very close to the edge of the platform.
Suddendly someone pushes forward and knocks the college student off the platform into the path of the oncoming train.
No one can reach him and there are only seconds before he will be crushed by the train.
The young actor pushes forward and with all his might reaches down and yanks the college student back onto the platform.

Now here's the funny thing.

The young actor was James Booth

the college student was William Lincoln.

the brother of John Wilks Booth saves the son of Abraham Lincoln from death three weeks before the assasination.

funny twist in history.

Lincoln was killed by a radical Confederate by the name of John Wilkes Booth, part of a hugely popular acting family. His original plans were to kidnap Lincoln and use him as a pawn to end the war. The Civil War ended before he could carry his plans out. Booth learned that Lincoln and Grant were going to attend a play called An American Cousin. Since Booth was well known at Ford Theater so he had easy access to the theater when it was closed. He bored a hole in the door to the seating area that Lincoln was to sit in. As the play reached a certain part Booth shot Lincoln in the back of the head. Lincoln was carried across the street where he died the next morning.

Grant, although invited to watch the play with Lincoln can celled because his wife thoroughly disliked Lincoln's wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.

There is more to this but you wanted to know about who killed Lincoln. A terrible loss for the country and just at the wrong time.
