Parmenides believed that all is one and at the same time, that change is an illusion; this is true of Eastern thinking, as well.

After all, it was Aristotle's staunch belief in the first three laws of logic that broke from any Eastern philosophies, and these were
1. A thing is what it is
2. A thing cannot be what it is not
3. A thing cannot be and not be at the same time.

This would give food for Heraclitus' belief that the only permanence is change.

I, however, being more Eastern in thinking do believe that there IS only permanence, that what is is also what is not, that a thing can be and not be at the same time, and that all time exists in one time, always has, always will, but only appears to each of us during differing phases of our illusions.

True being is timeless, motionless and changeless, in my opinion (and the followers of Parmenides).

I've always liked Heraclitus' description of change as being the only permanence: "A man cannot walk into the same river twice."

I don't happen to agree with him. That moment always was and will always be, along with the other moments into which the man walked into that river, and will again walk into the river; each time, he may be in different waters, but each time is eternal and permanent.

The only thing that is permanent in this Universe that I think off is the sky.Everything else will vanish away, like the planet Mars. The scientists sad it use to be water and life in it know these things no longer exists.

The human being.

As long as the universe exists there has to be life on it. As such, there will always be love, hate, desire, war, peace, and the pursuit of happiness, wealth, and wisdom.

There cannot be any of the other answers which I read, without the human. Including change, and impermanence.

Cant really say; but watching the band "Blondie" right
now- thats a different ball game!(especially debra,who
showed how a more-or-less permanent trait should be
used-she stopped singing to care for her ill partner;he
died, some years later;so not only was Debbie all woman,
her unselfish action was lovely to behold; And i apologise
for this less than perfect info;for in an almost empty and
hostile Universe,i am glad to be given an opportunity
to join in with the other replies).

I think love is permanent in this universe there is no doubt about it. Love for God (if one believes in him as I do), for family, for friends, for your boyfriend/girlfriend. I am under the hopeful belief that it lasts forever even after your gone. I think its because I am a hopeless romantic.

Nothing...just the infinite universe itself...which is always expanding.
Earth isn't permanent. They reckon it will be obliterated (supernova- sun) in around 6 billion years.

The survival of life in any form. Whatever happens to the world, life always goes on, whether in the form of microscopic bacteria or human beings.

I think love is permanent and everything else is temporary. Love may change or evolve, but I don't think it ever goes away - even beyond this life.
