Look at the chain itself. There will be an arrow showing you the direction that the chain needs to spin. By the way, the teeth go to the outside.

B.S. is correct the saw pulls the chain from the bottom towards the saw..................... but make sure the sharpest edge is the leading edge. I have run chainsaws for almost 20 years and never once have i seen arrows to show the direction. I have replaced half a million chains,,,,,,,, there are no arrows!!!!! Another tip...... before you install the chain take a matchbook fold it once and run it through the bar where the chain rides. This will clean out all the GUNK and allow the saw to lube the chain therefore extending the life of the chain. ...TIMBER............

Cutting edges of the chain facing away from the engine, not toward the engine.
It's not a stupid question, you wouldn't beleive how many people get them on backwards and come to shop saying the saw won't cut.

When you hold the saw in your hands, the chain on top goes away from you so the sawdust/chips fly away from you, while underneath the blade the chain comes toward you to snug up against the log or tree you are cutting through.

the leading edge of the teeth [the sharpened bit] comes out the top of the saw bar...and go's in to the saw on the bottom.

the chain will leave you on the top of the bar, cut as it returns to the saw...

and...incodently..it's prety difficult to put it in up-side down, or backwards, any way...

The sharp teeth of the chain will travel towards the motor on the bottom of the blade, and away from the motor on the top of the blade. The top of the blade will have the safety stop switch and primary handle.

Not a stupid question and anyone who thinks it is has an insecurity complex. Probably belittles their children.
