I'm a beginner at this stuff, and i've done some basic research. i think it has to do with some of the screws interfering with the circuit? should I just get some washers or something?

the reason i say this is because a few days ago i put it on a cardboard box and it seemed to start up fine.

Thanks for taking your time to help me out.

You need to install the plastic spacers/retainers that came with the motherboard. The motherboard shorts out because it is making contact with the computer case. Install the spacers and the problem should be solved.

And if this works, give me my 10 points.

With some OS's you lose the screen if you've set prefs options too small, but that's likely not the case. Did the laptop take a fall or a hard hit? Maybe it's a bug? What happens if you put an OS install disk in the slot, like the free "Ubuntu-910" or the free "Fedora-14", and reboot?

The screw must by electrically connected to the motherboard, to ground it against the case.
The screw heads, may be touching a curcuit, or a component. That is why you sometimes, need insulating washers.

Probably your capacitors are going south for the winter. Need a little more info on your diagnosis of your mobo. Calm down, take a breath, may not be as bad as you think.

Depending on why it is happening...you're likely going to have to replace it.
