I ask because the song "Computer Love" by Zapp & Roger has lyrics pertaining to online dating i.e. "is this your face I see on my computer screen?" Given the song was released in 1985, I was wondering if it was common, then, to see pictures when this song imerged (sort of like online dating). I read history of the internet and what not, but it didn't give me the detailed information I was looking for.

Hmm, that's an interesting question!
In 1985 I think there were no computers supporting graphics yet, that started only a few years later. The computers in those days were ascii based, monochrome text. They did make graphics for that though, much like the X'mas trees that people sent around by sms before mobile phones had graphics Maybe in the song it's a reflection of the face in the computer screen? Are you sure it's about online dating?

As for internet history, before 1991 they were purely text based, online newsgroups, etc. In 1991 Gopher was the first "browser" and started using hypertext and hyperlinks for info, but still text based.

In 1993 Mosaic was the first graphical browser and the basis for what we now experience as browsing. So, that would be the time that photos started appearing on the internet. Bear in mind though that connection speeds in those days were not like now, so you wouldn't have had highly graphical applications yet. I remember that in those days we still mainly used text based newsgroups and such.

Back in the early 80's (and before), pictures were sent as compressed coded files, and reassembled (they were typically broken into 2 or more files), de-coded, and then finally shown on the screen.
