x² - 2x + 4 = 0

[ (-2)/2 ]² = 1

x² - 6x + 5 = 0

[ (-6)/2 ]² = 9

(x² - 2x + 1) = - 4 + 1
(x - 1)² = - 3
(x - 1) = ± √(3i²)
(x - 1) = ± i √3
1 has been added to both sides.

Question 2
x² - 6x = - 5
x² - 6x + 9 = - 5 + 9
(x - 3)² = 4
(x - 3) = ± 2
x = 3 ± 2
x = 1 , x = 5
9 has been added to both sides.
