At that age they should still be getting most of their nutrients from breast milk/formula. Only one serving of baby food at this point.

First, it sounds like you're going WAY too fast with introducing new foods. You need to wait 4 days before each new food so that you can isolate food allergies. For example: today's the 21st so if you introduced apples today you wouldn't want to introduce another new food until the 24-25th. If you throw everything at her all at once and she breaks out in a rash you won't have any idea what she's reacting too.

Second, you didn't mention breast milk or formula consumption. That is the one thing that should not change at this stage. She should continue consuming just as many ounces of either as she was before getting solid foods. If she's filling up on baby food and not getting enough of what should be her primary food source then she will end up malnourished because baby foods do not offer the correct balance of nutrients by themselves.

Third, "they" say you can't overfeed a baby, but its not totally true. Babies do have the ability to turn away when they are full without regard for what's left on their plate, but if you overoffer food their internal signals will get overridden and they will overfeed. That's a rarer scenario, but not completely unheard of.

Check out the starting solids section on babycenter.com for more information and tips on starting solids. Current literature suggests waiting until 6 months to start solids because babies intestinal tracts are still not fully able to deal with solids before that age.

But to me, it sounds like too much. My 7 month old has solids just 2 times per day, rice cereal in the morning and homemade baby food in the evening (4oz of stage 1 equivalent texture).

You always start feeding with rice cereal, but the timing is totally up to you. Babies can live on breast milk or formula for the first 12 months and get all the nutrition that they need. Usually you wait until around 5 months old before you introduce food. You start putting a little rice cereal in a bottle mixed with breast milk or formula, and then eventually where you can spoon feed. They don't need the stage one until they are ready for more tastes. Plus you'll save tons of money by not starting food so early and just breast feeding.

I think that 1 jar of baby food at each meal along with a bottle/sippy cup of formula is fine-the step 1 jars are small. Although as everyone has said formaula is their main source of nutrition at this point. I think this is a good start if your child is eating it well-my child almost refused to eat it for the first week or so. You are suppose to pick one kind of baby food (i.e. carrots) and serve it for all meals for at least 3 days to watch for allergies.

well i don't believe in such a thing as over feeding your baby because when your baby gets full she will not be interested in eating anymore of what you're trying to offer her.....and at 4 1/2 months maybe try to substitute one meal but continue with bottle feeding till about 6months and then try with more then one meal substitution for baby food and cereal!!!

I think that is too much. When my baby started food her doctor said to feed her once a day with solids then milk the rest. Now she is 8 months and she is supposed to eat solids three times a day. Talk to you ped about this.

she should still be getting most of her nutrition from formula or breastfeeding. the "food" should just be supplementing it at this point. once a day is usually how you start, in addition to the same amount of bottles she had before. it's usually not for a few more months that they are having "meals" and even that could wait unitl a year old.

too much solids
cut back and give her more formula for awhile longer
you're going to have a huge problem on your hands in a few days. let me explain: your baby's intestinal tract isn't used to solid foods at the quantity that you're feeding. your child is going to be very constipated . solid foods need to be introduced a little at the time to prevent constipation and to get her body used to it
also you need to introduce one food at the time, like carrots one week and peas the next week and so on
if she's allergic to something and your feeding her several different foods you won't know which one it is and you'll wind up giving it her again

Youre fine... my son started eating food at 2 months. He is 10 months and hasnt touch baby food since 6 months or so.

As my dr says... if they eat they need the calories to grow.
