For years, along with other remedies to keep my PC running smoothly, I have always defragged my hard drive on a regular basis [monthly]. My daughter just had a technician tell her to NEVER defrag; especially after d/loading programs. What a shock! Opinions, please.

Never defrag????
I seriously question this persons credentials.

Microsoft has this to say

You should defrag about once every 6 months if you are using XP, or anytime you install a new program. Defraging lines up all like data and allows your hard drive to run smoother and more efficiently. But in all cases, just analyze the drive first. XP will let you know if it needs to be defraged or not.

Anyway, that's how this tech does it.

I never heard nothing like that! I'm so surprised!!!
Have always done it!
But it might be true, because there are a lot of Windows up-dates from Microsoft, that when you do the up-date, instead of making your PC better, makes it worst and doesn't even let your windows run.
So, probably there's a new problem with the defragment now too.... You never know!!!!!!!!

I defrag and scan for errors regularly. (I do use 3rd party software, not microsoft software). It sounds like that tech was hoping to confuse your daughter (probably in hopes of her calling him for work more frequently).

Tech is full of carp, it is part and parcel of keeping your computer working properly!
