If you're taking I-94, and get as far as Billings, you might as well go the extra distance and hit Yellowstone. Definitely worth the time. I can tell you that between Billings and Rapid City, SD along I-90, there are only a couple of places worthy of mention. The Battlefield Little Big Horn Nat'l Monument, the Big Horn Mountain Range, and in Eastern Wyoming, Devil's Tower, the latter being the most spectacular. In South Dakota, if you're going to Mt Rushmore, don't miss the CrazyHorse monument under construction just minutes away from Mt Rushmore. Take the tour! Lot's of tourist trap-like places dot the entire Black Hills now, but definely be sure to make it to the Badlands of SD, just outside Rapid City. Take the scenic route later in the afternoon. As the sun sets, it brings out the colors of the landscape. You won't be disappointed.

Take the time to go to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks in Wyoming if you've never been. Even though you didn't list itinerary in WY it's worth it. Also, go to Glacier National Park in Montana if you haven't been...Going to the Sun Road is great, but go early in the morning for less hurried, more leisurely pace.
In Bozeman MT there is a national computer museum with lots of really old computers with historic interest. I recall it's in a shopping mall or something strange like that; it has limited hours but is pretty interesting.
You have to see Mt. Rushmore if you haven't been. Wind Cave National Park in S. Dakota also very interesting. There are several large caves with tours in that area. Custer National Park very beautiful too. S. Dakota also has Devil's Tower, which is the place where the aliens land in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
