1. i am aware that iwo to is the original name
2. j.s., i didn't give you the thumbs down by the way, and thanks for letting me know about the current events catagory; i completely missed it before i posted the question
3. the entire world recognizes the name iwo jima; only about 400 vets living there were bothered by it
4. no, other countries don't go around changing names of islands all the time, especially world renowned islands. it happens, but not all the time
5. pluto not being a planet is kinda wierd, but it doesn't mark a place where people, american and japanese, bled and died doing what they thought was right for their country, people and families.
my beef is that if the japanese are willing to change the name of something so important and influential, what else are they willing to sweep under the rug. not just japan, but any country for that matter, including the u.s.. i just think it is a slippery slope to start walking and there needs to be a line somewhere

They may change it to Iwo To but history will always remember it as Iwo Jima. Let the inhabitants change it to whatever they want, but what happened there will never change.

Iwo Jima is a volcanic island. How could an island change the world?

Can you find a place in the ocean off Portugal called 'Trafalgar'? Does this mean that the Battle of Trafalgar will be forgotten or diminished?

I'm a little more concerned that prominent Japanese people don't seem to think the Imperial Army used indentured sex slaves or committed gross atrocities between 1937 and 1945.

Well, "Iwo To" was the original name used by the original inhabitants, and naming it "Iwo Jima" was just a stupid mistake by Japanese officers at the time. Happens all the time, get over it.

Yes, I have already read about this. No, I am not pissed off about a name change - the Japanese can call their islands by any names they would like. As this event has just happened - this question belongs in the News & Events, Current Events category.
Thanks for the thumbs down - maybe YA should create a new category called 'Instant History' to fulfill your needs.
