Unfortunately, refrain from alcohol. Must drink plenty of fluids however. Some people find that electrolyte replacement fluids (such as Gookinaid) are helpful. Make sure you have effective headache and nausea meds with you in case you need them. Don't be afraid you'll look stupid for getting woosey and needing to rest awhile. I have a hard time above 9,000-10,000 myself, but you do acclimate over several days. Good luck.

some people take medicine for altitude sickness. Most people do not get sick. You should ask your doctor about that.
I do not think there are any other preparations. But, once you arrive, there are are some things you can do. First of all, just take it easy for a while. See how you feel. Avoid drinking. Or at least at first. If you do feel sick, there is an easy cure. Just head down hill. But, like I said, most people do not get ill. You may feel a bit tired or sleepy. And you will feel out of breath with exercise.
Where are you going? Have a fun and safe trip!

A small brown paper bag if you are going to Hawaii's highest peaks if not on an air conditioned bus. I couldn't breathe up there very long.
Tibet mountain guides' blood changes in high altitudes, but you can't practice in advance.

Bring ALOT of GUM because the higher you go your ears will start to hurt like hell and you have to pop your ears (some people yawn) but it is easier to chew gum because its tastier :) and sometimes its hard to make yourself yawn all the time you should have your whole family bring gum because i have gone up in a plane and i drove up into the high mountains and i started to cry because my ears hurted soooooo badly so have fun and BRING GUM!!!!!!!!
