Good question. When you really think about it, all the bands considered to be top notch (like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Queen, The Who, The Rolling Stones, etc) are all British.
I'd agree though with either The Doors, Van Halen, The Eagles, and maybe Aerosmith for the greatest American band.

Van Halen's songwriting, whether with David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar is great! And Eddie Van Halen influenced every guitarist that was alive or has been born since.
