Please consider carefully before you do something like this that the fish will need to be cared for before the party and will also need a home after the party. There is no reason you can't do this, but do carefully consider the fish before you do.

Unfortunately, there are too many instances where live fish as a centerpiece wind up as casualties. This does not have to be the case for yours. Just make sure you have lined up homes for the fish before the party and that you have taken precautions that no one will be able to pour anything into the centerpiece as their form of a "joke". These "jokes" are deadly to the fish. With a little care and foresight, it could be absolutely wonderful. If you are thinking bowls instead of tanks, you should not use goldfish. Contrary to popular fable, goldfish do not do well in bowls and are likely to die quickly regardless of the precautions taken. If you were thinking fish bowls, you might want to consider using betas, they do much better in bowls.

Live fish are live. Seems pretty obvious, but you have to provide for the life and health of animals you bring into your house. They would make a great centerpiece, but before you set up the fish tank, make sure you have a place to keep them.

If you aren't sure about keeping live fish, think about making a colorful mobile of fish. You could put the name of each of your guests on one, and you could have something special for each one. If you watch "Pirate Masters" on Thursdays, you could get some ideas for games to play with a nautical theme, even having a treasure for a top prize.
Or, if pirates aren't your preference, you could have an "America's Cup" yacht race theme.

Every one here has great post, Ok, You need homes for the fish after the party, I suggest Bettas they are verry colorfull and do not require all the things that other fish need. There not the cheapest fish ( like feeder fish, or Gold fish, or guppies) You can put one in a nice size bowl. or if you have a large punch bowl you can but a smaller glass cup or something with enought space to swim and also tall enough so that punch and fish water get mixed up....

If you need me to better explain I will do my best but you will have to contact me using my Q&A page!

That's a terrible idea. The friend was probably thinking of bettas - I've read about people doing this. The problem is, then you have a whole lot of bettas to take care of or find a home for. Plus while you're prepping for the party, they're probably being kept in inadequate homes, getting slowly poisoned by the poor water conditions. It's just cruel. Please reconsider the idea and say no.

Congratulations on your up coming birthday but I agree with most of the other answers-you are talking about living, feeling creatures as if they were no more than mere decoration. You should consider their welfare before doing anything like this. There are many more ways to make an attractive centrepiece without using live animals. You have 3 months to plan it so be creative & have fun but also please be kind.
