Why doesn't everyone build one?

Subaru purchased the right to build the boxer engine from Porsche to fit their specs. As the theory goes, a straight six by design has less friction than a v block. Gravity also plays a part in the ease of a straight block engine design operating in an optimal mode because of less tension to move the parts. This is Subaru's claim to fame. Look at their brochure.

The ER27 (Subaru's first flat six) was not purchased from Porsche, it was all Subaru. Flat engines, whether they be 4, 6, 8+ cylinders are good for cars because they are perfectly balanced and require no crankshaft counterweights. They take up less room and are pretty lightweight and rev-happy, however they typically have a short stroke, which makes them less torquier than straight sixes. V6s are just plain dumb.

A straight 6 is not a flat 6. A flat six has three cylinders on each side in a flat configuration as opposed to a V configuration. The flat shape is better for sports cars because the weight is closer to the ground. They are harder to repair because they are so low. They also are not as strong because they don't have as much metal in them (but they are lighter).

By flat 6, are you talking about a Boxer engine or a flat head 6 cylinder, straight in-line? I can't tell you why they are great engines, but if you think so , then get one. good luck

Details, Details. You mean the older flat head 6 or the opposed 6 like a subby?

What? I didn't know anything makes it exceptionally good. It's just a different setup nobody - as far as I know - uses but Subaru.
