It's a part of formal attire. You can wear flats if you're too young, too old or otherwise unable to wear heels. Or if the wedding happens to be very informal or unusual in other ways.
You can in fact dance very well in heels with a little bit of practice. Taking the shoes off at a formal event is poor manners btw but people do it anyway. This is when the tredding on the toes becomes dangerous, because some people still wear shoes.

Oh yeah, Mark is correct - heels are pretty much required for ballroom. Being a ballroom person for many years, I don't know how to dance without heels anymore. LOL.

As other answerers before me have said, it is a matter of fashion that women wear high heels to a wedding.

So a woman can't dance properly in high heeled shoes? For competitive ballroom dancers, a woman is effectively disqualified if she is not wearing a shoe with at least a 2-1/2 inch heel. My dance teacher at Camelot Ballroom studio told me that the judges will not even score a couple where the woman is not wearing heels. Not much incentive to dance competitively if you know that you will have a score of zero regardless of how well you dance.

Now if the dance is Balboa or Argentine Tango, it is necessary that women wear high heeled shoes.

However, if you are going to have a swing dance only wedding reception, make sure everybody is wearing the Bleyer Swing Dance Shoes.

People wear high heels to work, clubs, formal or special occasions and weddings, because they look smart, feminine, more attractive, sexy, taller and more elegant.
Any learning curves like being unable to dance can easily be overcome with experience.
Hope this helps ;o)

Because when paired with the right skirt, they can make your legs look longer. Plus, they just make your outfit look more formal. But after everyone has seen you at the wedding and its time for the reception, you take them off so you can dance.
