I'm not a huge fan of British lit. myself. The Brits do tend to be a little dry and kind of drag everything on for more chapters than might be necessary. With this in mind, however, I would like to suggest a few books I did like.
1. Anything by Jane Austen, but Pride and Prejudice is her most popular, and since there have been a few movies made of it, you might have an easier time understanding it. (I suggest the version with Colin Firth playing Mr. Darcy.) Of course it's romantic, but it also discusses the roles women had in Austen's day. I love it!
2. The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis is a very easy read and it's highly entertaining. It's about a demon giving a lesser demon instructions on how to get a guy's soul.
3. David Copperfield, Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol--all three are by Charles Dickens. A little hard to muddle through, at times, but the stories are pretty good (mostly dealing with boys trying to become men, except for A Christmas Carol--you know Scrooge and "Bah Humbug!"
4. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. This is a very good story, with Gothic elements, about a young, orphaned, governess. I love this story. Once again, it's a little hard to get through (all that dry English wit) but it's a very good story if you do.

All of them are fairly long-winded and tedious writers (Charles Dickens got paid by the word and he went for the big bucks. Tolkien was a professor and it shows. Austen and the Brontes have a heavy-handed style.) If I would pick one, it would be C S Lewis because he, at least, wove a fairly interesting tale in his thinly-veiled religious tomes. Since Narnia has been done to death, you might try the Screwtape Letters or some other title.

if you want an easy book to read and just complete your assignment then i'd say go for C.S. Lewis....i found his books pretty childish....if you wanna go for some tough stuff, go for dickens, austen....they both have hard old english....as for tolkien i've read his LOTR trilogy...it's pretty good....but it needs a lot of imagination on the reader's part....then only you will understand what all he describes...as for the others....i havn't got a clue

Well C.S.Lewis wrote the Narnia series, if you like them you'll enjoy his books.
J.R.Tolkien wrote Lord of The Rings which personally I think it's boring, but there are many people who enjoy them :)
Charles Dickens wrote The Adventures of Oliver Twist, which is enjoyable for I read for school too ..many of these authors are good and have good books. I say you try wikipedia.org and see all their books and then decide.
