i' ve been living in the U.S since 1999. I came from Greece when i was pretty young, i'm now 21, and i still can't adjust to life here. I mean..eveyrthing is so depressing, stores close at 8, people are very closed to themselves and mind their own business. Some will look at you weird if you ask them a question some will ignore you. Why is that? how come europeans are more social and here everything is different? I'm guessing things are better for the mexicans, russians, asians etc since there's plenty of them here but what about the rest of the minorities? i stuggle to meet other europeans and when i do they are 'amecanized' acting like the rest of the people here.

i live in sacramento..not a small town at all. borders and a few other restaurants and cafes close late but most starbucks', the mall and restaurants are closed at 9. this is sad since it's summer and it seems too early not having to do anything after 9. also there's no 'hang out' places other than starbucks. for ex. back in my country we had one main street or a square where most cafes where and that's where you d find the most people. here the most lively area is the downtown and still there's nothing to do there. only a coulple bars and restaurants are open surounded by bums and 'bad' people...

i'm guessing the lifestyle here changes people. it's true people only care about making money here. some have a goal to become rich and stay here and some to make some money and move back. life is easy here you can afford things other people in other countries can't. you actually have a chance to improve your life. if things were more 'loose' people more open and relaxed america would be the best place to live.

I too came to the US when I was young (10) but that was 50 years ago. The only reason I stayed is that when I was 18 I fell in love with an american girl. After all these years I still miss Europe and still notice the difference between americans & europeans. I think the problem is that americans are too busy working and trying to make a buck and have little time left to really enjoy themselves. Things were not as bad years ago but have been getting progressively worse. The US is bankrupt and people are just trying to keep their heads above water. Too make matters worse, we are loosing our freedoms on a daily basis. Frankly, if I could afford to live in europe I would be there in a heartbeat. My suggestion is that you are still young and you may be able to adjust to the american lifestyle eventually but, if you think you can't (like I still could not after all these years) you should think about going back to greece if that is a possibility. Best wishes, Joe

Where do you live in the U.S.? I live in Ohio. Many of our stores close at 9. Some are open later (like Border's, etc.) Restaurants will be open later- past 9. if you are in a small town, then, yes, perhaps the stores close earlier. Many people like to be home with their families.

Americans are usually very friendly and open- once they get to know you and are comfortable with you. Isn't it good that Americans mind their own business? Would you want someone prying into your personal business? (Where are you from? Why did you come here? Why aren't you working? You have an accent!)

Have you been to school? Have you joined any clubs or sports groups? Americans appreciate those who come to their country but they also have a lot of respect for those who make serious attempts to learn the language and to appreciate the culture.

It does suck. As an American born and raised in Minnesota I do think you are right. I traveled the world and came back to the US and it does suck. People are rude, selfish, hypocrites, self centered, superficial, fat, slutty, stupid, boastful, and I could go on. I am ashamed of the culture here in America. The feminist movement destroyed the dating world to. I have noticed that alot of people who say they are christian are huge hypocrites to especially the women. Women in america are horrible as well. You cant even look at one. It was way better overseas for me. They would come up to me and talk and they were beautiful and their bodies we re great. Here in america it totally sucks. I am going back to work soon and I am glad. I'm suck of this rude ***** culture. America is weak minded and is destined to fail and it will.

Before you came, it used to be different. IPods and cellphones are making some people more isolated, but it is a trend in society beyond that.
People used to be more even in their income and lifestyle, television used to play the same stuff to everybody on 1 to about five channels every night, it was easier to trust people to not want to take advantage when they met you. This was America 30 years ago; and it was friendly. .
Just keep saying hello and be understanding if they are too scared to reply or too hateful and arrogant or just can't hear you.

Agreed. I live in Texas and hate it. There's things I like about it, but it's not as cultural as Germany. I'm also currently 21, and would move back to Germany in a heartbeat.

Americans are also really nosy. If they hear an accent, they'll point it out and ask where you're from. They also judge you quickly. This guy started talking to me in Spanish out of the blue just because I "looked Spanish" to him. Wtf? In Europe, most people mind their own business and don't ask silly questions like this. In public, you see people who go out like they just got out of bed. They don't take care of themselves, but that's a different story. They're also not animal friendly. In Europe, you can go to the mall with your dog, and stop for a smoke break at a smoking lounge. They're more open to smokers over there.

So Texas is okay, but I would only visit it. I much prefer life in Germany.

I just don't know. I've lived here all my life and I am tired. I am alone. No one cares much for me. I will be dead soon. This is how everyone I know feels. Many of my friends are dead. I guess this is how we are supposed to feel in America. I don't know anything except brokenness. I guess that's what life is. Sadness puctuated by death. I know nothing else.

Not so very far away is San Francisco, which never closes, lad. In the USA there are 50 states, and several are larger in population and GNP than many European and African countries. Surely, there must be one of them that would please you. Try Boston, which has a large Greek-American population. Good luck to you.

i have heard some people say that about other countries they visit they only thing i can say is that your parents or yourself moved you here my best advice is either adjust or move to europe if that is the kind of life you are looking for this is america get americanized as you call it and deal with it or do something about and move to europe not all americans are like that i think you just insulted 95% of americans wich since you are living here are one of them
